To understand Roy’s style and themes, I’ve compiled a list of songs that match a style or theme used by Roy in The God of Small Things:

"On the Radio" by Regina Spektor – Spekor’s song matches the child-like word
play and innocence to explore morbid, adult themes like death.

   Lyrics:

This is how it works
It feels a little worse
Than when we drove our hearse
Right through that screaming crowd

While laughing up a storm
Until we were just bone
Until it got so warm
That none of us could sleep

And all the Styrofoam
Began to melt away
We tried to find some words
To aid in the decay

But none of them were home
Inside their catacomb
A million ancient bees
Began to sting our knees

While we were on our knees
Praying that disease
Would leave the ones we love
And never come again

On the radio
We heard, 'November Rain'
That solo's really long
But it's a pretty song
We listened to it twice
'Cause the DJ was asleep

This is how it works
You're young until you're not
You live until you don't
You try until you can't

You laugh until you cry
You cry until you laugh
And everyone must breathe
Until their dying breath

No, this is how it works
You peer inside yourself
You take the things you like
And try to love the things you took

And then you take that love you made
And stick it into some
Someone else's heart
Pumping someone else's blood

And walking arm in arm
You hope it don't get harmed
But even if it does
You'll just do it all again

And on the radio
You'll hear, 'November Rain'
That solo's awful long
But it's a good refrain
You'll listen to it twice
'Cause the DJ is asleeeeeep

On the radio, on the radio
On the radio, uh oh, on the radio, uh oh
On the radio, uh oh, on the radio oh oh oh

"Moth’s Wings" by Passion Pit – This is song utilizes one of the same images as Roy’s “two-egg twins” and seems to impart a longing for stability that is similar to that of Estha and Rahel. It easily could have been written from Rahel to Estha when they are reunited later in life.

Lyrics:

Dear friend, as you know
Your flowers are withering
Your mother's gone insane
Your leaves have drifted away
But the clouds are clearing up
And I've come reveling
Burning incandescently
Like a bastard on the burning sea

You're just like your father
Buried deep under the water
You're resting on your laurels
And stepping on my toes
Whose side are you on?
What side is this anyway?
Put down your sword and crown
Come lay with me on the ground

You come beating like moth's wings
Spastic and violently
Whipping me into a storm
Shaking me down to the core
But you run away from me
And you left me shimmering
Like diamond wedding rings
Spinning dizzily down on the floor

You're just like your father
Buried deep under the water
You're resting on your laurels
And stepping on my toes
Whose side are you on?
What side is this anyway?
Put down your sword and crown
Come lay with me on the ground

"Love of the Loveless" by Eels – This song is about being capable of love, but being judged unfit to give love, as is Velutha.

Lyrics:

Don't got a lot of time
Don't give a damn
Don't tell me what to do
I am the man
If there's a god up there
Something above
God, shine your light down here
Shine on the love

Love of the loveless
Love of the loveless

Don't have too many friends
Never felt at home
Always been my own man
Pretty much alone
I know how to get through
And when push comes to shove
I got something that you need
I got the love

Love of the loveless
Love of the loveless
Love of the loveless
The love of the loveless

All around you people walking
Empty hearts and voices talking
Looking for and finding
Nothing

Don't got a lot of time
Don't really care
Not selling anything
Buyer beware
If there's a god up there
Something above
God, shine your light down here
Shine on the love

Love of the loveless
Love of the loveless
Love of the loveless
The love of the loveless

Don't got a lot of time
Don't give a damn
Don't tell me what to do
I am the man

Love of the loveless
Love of the loveless
The love of the loveless
Love of the loveless

"Can’t Come Quickly Enough" by Scissor Sisters – This song seems to impart a bittersweet longing that is present in the twins as they are first united. They realize that, although they are together again, they must find a way to be one again and are not sure how to accomplish this feat.

Lyrics:

Sailing through the tunnels
In the morning by yourself
There's a very special feeling
True sensation, all is well
If you stand and reach your arms out wide
Close your eyes and try to fly
It's an underground illusion
Tricking you from side to side

We knew all the answers and we
Shouted them like anthems
Anxious and suspicious that God
Knew how much we cheated

It can't come quickly enough
And now you've spent your life
Waiting for this moment
And when you finally saw it come it
Passed you by and left you so defeated

Skyscrapers rise between us
Keeping me from finding you
If the concrete architecture
Disappeared there'd be so few
Of us left to navigate and defend
Ourselves from the tide
It's an underground illusion
Tricking you from side to side

There's no indication of what
We were meant to be
Sucking up to strangers throwing
Wishes to the sea

And it can't come quickly enough
And now you've spent your life
Waiting for this moment
And when you finally saw it come it
Passed you by and left you so defeated
